Welcome to Budapest
Budapest is the capital of Hungary and is situated along the Danube River, in the heart of the Carpathian basin. Across the river sprawls flat Pest and hilly Buda on 525 km2. The capital in its 23 districts has 1,886,000 inhabitants.
Budapest plays determining role not only throughout Hungary but also in the neighbouring countries.
Numerous cultural events attract a wide international audience. In recent years the UNESCO put several parts of the city on the list of World Heritage.
Hot springs breaking through limestone mountains made Budapest one of the most popular spa cities of Europe. There is probably no other capital city on the globe with swimming pools and bathing halls dating back to the Turkish occupation and still in use today, with thermal spas irradiating the rich colours and forms of Art Nouveau and featuring one of the largest spas in Europe.
